Ute Aurand se narodila v roce 1957 ve Frankfurt nad Mohanem, vyrůstala v Berlíně. Začátkem osmdesátých let vystudovala fim na Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie v Berlíně. Od roku 1985 produkuje své vlastní 16mm filmy. V roce 1987 založila Ute Aurand Filmproduktion. Filmová teoretička Erika Balsom ji označuje za klíčovou figuru berlínské experimentální scény od druhé poloviny 80. let do současnosti.
