Lecture on the art scene of Athens, the practices of artists and art professionals in times of crisis, and hopefully a discussion with the audience on the current state of play in the contemporary European art scene through a sociopolitical viewpoint.

Iliana Fokianaki is an art critic and curator based in Athens. She has studied in London at City University London (Arts Criticism and Management). She lived in London until 2005, where she worked for institutions and commercial galleries. Apart from extensively writing on Greek contemporary culture she has curated exhibitions for private galleries, and museums as well as private initiatives. Her latest project is State of Concept, a non-profit gallery that is based in Athens and promotes young Greek and international artists through solo exhibitions, as well as providing art students with free consultation in order to further their studies and develop their projects. It has been operating through exhibitions since May 2013. It inaugurated its new space in the center of Athens in January 2014. State of Concept has worked with artists such as Keren Cytter, Basim Magdy, Hans op De Beeck, Hito Steyerl, Filipa Cesar, and will be working in the coming months with artists Laure Prouvost and Jonas Staal. Iliana Fokianaki is a contributing author of the book The International Art Markets (Kogan Page, London, New York, 2009) and has lectured on contemporary art locally and in Europe. She is a member of the IKT, the International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art.

Drawing on material from her recent feature film Moderation (2015) Anja Kirschner will talk about certain tendencies in horror cinema from coldwar Europe, Infitah-era Egypt and post-junta Greece, that refused to naturalistically represent lived experience or to sublimate it by recourse to the irrational.

3 137 is an artist run space in Athens founded by three greek artists. The space is used as a studio and opens its gates 3 to 4 times per year to organize exhibitions as also events such as artist talks, presentations and performances. 3 137 is a meeting point for creation and collaboration. An independent initiative that promotes artistic practices and supports experimental ways of art production, curatorship and presentation.

Nadja Argyropoulou is an independent curator based in Athens. She has received a Bachelor’s degree in History & Archaeology (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and a Master’s degree in Art History and Theory (Essex University, UK). From 1993 to 2001 she was the Director of Cultural Programming and Public Affairs of the Hellenic American Union in Athens. In 2003, she was Head of Culture and Image at the Department of the EU Hellenic Presidency Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She was the assistant curator for the Greek Pavilion at the 2005 and 2007 Venice Biennials and collaborated with the 1st Athens Biennial 2007. Argyropoulou has curated a number of exhibitions, most recently What remains is future (within the Programme of Patras European Capital of Culture, 2006), and I Syghroni Elliniki Skini, (Art Athina, 2007). Furthermore, she has curated and organised a large number of cultural events in Greece and abroad (dance, cinema, music and theatre productions, conferences, projects on ecology, etc). Since 2007 she has been collaborating with the DESTE Foundation Center for Contemporary Art. She contributes to magazines and newspapers in Greece and abroad and writes texts for solo and group exhibitions.
